Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a therapy designed to assist your lymphatic system in circulating lymph through the body.

The Lymphatic System

Your lymphatic system aids your immune system in flushing out infection via lymph. Lymph is fluid containing white blood cells that attack infection and abnormal cells. The bad lymph fluid is filtered out by lymph nodes, and then flushed back into your bloodstream. The liver or kidneys rid them from the body. The good stuff gets sent back into the blood stream for hydration and re-oxygenation.

How MLD Helps

MLD aids this process by providing light skin massage using specific techniques to move the lymph through the system. Note that this treatment should not be confused with traditional massage therapy - the muscles of the body are not targeted by MLD.

Is MLD Right For You?

MLD can provide benefit to people with fibromyalgia, sleep issues, anxiety, fatigue, swelling in the arms or legs, and those who are pregnant. Currently, Haven does not treat lymphedema or post-surgery patients with MLD, though we plan to do so in the future.

You should not get MLD if you have heart issues, infection, blood clots, or kidney problems. Please note that MLD is not intended to treat or cure diseases. Consult with your doctor if you’re unsure about receiving this treatment.
